Mark Anthony “Coota” Jones, 53, affectionately known by his loved ones as “Coota”, passed away on July 2, 2025, at Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro, NC.
Mark was born on April 13, 1972, to the late Benjamin Jones and Janice Jones. He “Coota” spent his early years in New Rochelle, NY, where he matriculated through their local public schools. His formative years laid the foundation for the thoughtful, loyal, and strong man he would become. In his youth, Coota loved to play basketball, his was quick on his feet and was passionate about the fame, he would be often found shooting hoops with his friends at the neighborhood court.
In 1988, as a teenager, Coota relocate to Seneca, South Carolina and it was there, he completed his education while living with Betty “Ma”, Jack and Daryl Goodine. The Goodine’s guidance provided structure, and a sense of family that left a lasting imprint on his life.
In 1993, Coota returned to New York, where he worked customer service and retail jobs. He was employed at ShopRite in Yonkers and later with Costco in Peekskill. Coota was known for his reliability, easy-going nature and commitment to his work. Coota was respected by colleagues and appreciated by customers alike.
Coota had a passion for motorcycles, which brought him joy, calm, and connection with others who shared the same love. Coota loved his family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Janice Jones; his father, Benjamin Jones; one brother, Benjamin Jones, Jr.; two daughters, Lexus Scottmoore (Jersiah) of Jacksonville, FL and Amari Jones-Powell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one grandson Jersiah “Baby J” Scottmoore, Jr.; one brother Timothy Jones and one sister Jeannine Jones. Three aunts, Shirley Rowson, Charlene Fleming and Lily Darden. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; Coota shared a particularly special bond with his niece, Temia Jones Smalls. Coota loved his family and will be sorely missed, but his legacy lives on in the memories of his family and friends.
